Ol’ Harlan Ellison recently passed away, after some 60 years as a prolific writer, particularly of science fiction, although he insisted he wrote speculative fiction or perhaps just fiction.
I have to make a confession. I’m not a huge fan of his as a writer. I did enjoy A Boy and His Dog, and I liked several of the short stories in his collection Strange Wine. However, for me, much of his work was a bit too … much. I mean, aborted fetuses riding alligators in the sewers of New York in his short story Croatan?
However, my real experience was in a Youtube video in which he went off on how poorly writers are paid. Like a lot of things in his life, he exhibited a lot of anger as he spoke the absolute truth about paying writers. And I loved every second of it.
